With Autumn upon us it is easy for many of us to “fall off” the health/fitness train. Seriously, it happens! From holidays such as Halloween and Thanksgiving, to cooler weather, preparing for winter and holiday shopping, it becomes so much easier to fall off in Autumn, so I felt only right that we discuss how to NOT fall off in Autumn!
Why Do We Fall Off In Autumn
Let’s dive a little deeper into how many of us tend to fall off in Autumn. Things get more hectic as opposed to the summer time, when the kids are out of school (whether you have kids or not this affects you, i.e. school zones, etc.). We have holidays, and get togethers which equals more food, more eating, more calories, and less time for exercise! It’s colder, so our bodies literally have somewhat of a rubber band on it, or something akin to that, holding it back, wanting it to stay inside, in layers and in warmer conditions. That leads to the next reason we fall off in Autumn – being under more layers we aren’t seeing what we don’t want to see!
So How Do We Make Sure Not To Fall Off In Autumn
The first and foremost thing you must do is remember what and why you are striving to be fit and healthy. Having a strong sense of purpose, and reason for what it is you are doing is the key difference between those who stick to their goals and those who do not!
Next you want to make sure to remember a few key things when eating. One, take your time. Smell the roses, or better put, smell the turkey, the yams, whatever it is you are eating. Put away the cell phone, pay attention to your surrounds, your senses. And chew many times, around 25 – 30 times per bite! By doing this you allow your body to digest the food more effectively, you also allow your brain to focus in on what you’re doing so you know when you are full, or close to it. This is important in order to not overeat!
Finally, you want to make sure when you eat, you eat only until you are about 80% full. You do not want to go passed that. Just remember, you want to be alert, not in a food coma. You want to be light on your feet, so you can move around and burn calories! By eating to only about 80% full you also do what you were doing in the last paragraph, and you end up digesting your food better, more effectively!
Ok, one more “finally”! The first couple minutes of getting into the gym, or out on the road to run, etc. are the hardest. The point to remember is once you’re in it, you will enjoy it! It’s YOUR TIME, you get to work on yourself. You get to let out some energy, and it comes back to you in a positive way! And if you want one giant motivating factor, take a picture of your “summer best” and have it around at all times, or at places you frequent often, i.e. work, your kitchen, etc. Always think about how summer is literally just around the corner, and comes so much faster than we expect. You want to kill it next summer. You want to look 10 times better than you did last summer! And as you and I both know, summer bodies aren’t forged in the summer….they’re forged in the seasons leading up to summer!
In the end, it’s easy to fall off in Autumn. It’s also easy not to. Or better put, simple. Keep focused, remember your goals, eat slower, eat a little less (there’s always another meal coming and it’s usually pretty soon after your last one), and remember that summer is coming quicker than you expect!
